Handling Duplicate SKUs in Kase
Occasionally, you may receive an automated email from Kase alerting you to duplicate SKUs that require action. While Shopify allows multiple products to use the same SKU, our system only supports one variant per unique SKU. Duplicate SKUs can cause mapping issues and fulfillment delays if not resolved properly.
This guide will help you understand what causes duplicate SKUs, how to prevent them, and what to do when they appear.
🚨 Why Duplicate SKUs Happen
Duplicate SKUs can be created in several ways:
- Third-party apps like Recharge: These can push duplicate SKUs to your store unintentionally.
- Duplicating products in Shopify: Using the “Duplicate” feature in Shopify copies the original SKU, causing it to merge too early.
- Manual SKU changes: Updating SKUs directly in Shopify without coordination can cause mapping conflicts.
✅ What To Do When You Receive a Duplicate SKU Alert
When you receive a duplicate SKU alert from Kase, follow these steps:
- Do not make additional edits to the product in Shopify until the issue is resolved.
- Check if either SKU has inventory or order history attached.
Scenario A: One SKU Has Inventory or Order History
- You’ll need to mark the SKU with inventory/order history as the Master SKU.
Scenario B: Neither SKU Has Inventory or Orders
- In this case, select the SKU with the integration ID as the Master SKU.
- Click the diamond icon next to that SKU to assign it as the master.
If you’re ever unsure, reach out to the Kase Support Team, and we’ll help ensure the duplicate is merged correctly on the backend.
🛑 Avoiding Duplicate SKUs When Creating Products
Duplicating Products in Shopify
Using Shopify's “Duplicate” feature creates a product with the same SKU. Our system will attempt to merge it with the original before you update the SKU, which can result in mapping issues.
To avoid this:
- Create new products manually instead of duplicating.
- If you must duplicate, immediately update the SKU before it syncs to Kase.
🔧 SKU Changes in Shopify
Changing SKUs directly in Shopify can break existing product mappings in our system. Before making changes:
- Notify the Kase team so we can walk you through the cleanest process.
- Run test orders after any changes to validate that the product is mapped and flowing correctly.
🧪 Best Practices Recap
- Avoid duplicating products in Shopify.
- Don’t change SKUs without consulting our team.
- Run a test order anytime you change a SKU or product.
- Always mark the correct SKU as the Master SKU depending on the scenario.
